A paid summer educational and research program for healthcare professional students focused on the Opioid Crisis in America. Accepted students will spend 3-4 weeks learning and researching the Opioid Crisis. Learn the basics of clinical research, develop educational and public health strategies to combat the opioid crisis, and complete a research analysis to support their work.

Summer Research Fellowship

Objective
To provide a summer paid educational and research program for medical students focused on the Opioid Crisis in America. Accepted students will spend 3-4 weeks learning about the Opioid Crisis - including: learning the basics of clinical research, developing educational and public health strategies to combat the opioid crisis, and completing a research analysis to support their work. Students will shadow a physician with expertise in musculoskeletal, orthopaedic, and/or pain management in a clinical setting. By the end of the program, each student will submit a publishable research analysis.
Eligibility

Must be enrolled in an MD, DO, or DPM program and completed first year.

A legal resident of the United States.

Medical (MD / DO) and DPM students completing their first year.

Location
Combination of virtual meetings, live lectures, and clinical observorships across the Philadelphia region
Objectives
-
To understand the current status of the “Opioid Crisis” in America.

To understand the relevant pharmacology regarding opioids and other analgesics.

To understand the pathophysiology of opioid addiction.
-
To understand opioid-sparing pain management strategies.
-
To understand the mechanism, indications, and safety with Medical Cannabis.

To understand the research process - including; study design, statistical analysis, informed consent, IRB submission, and execution.

To produce a publication-worthy research analysis.
